Learning Shapes

This is a simple game that can be adjusted to your childs needs.  I used a file folder and milk caps and drew the shapes on each.  Adeline matched the caps to the correct shape.

If you are just starting matching or shapes you may want to use two different shapes and less shapes on the folder.  This is completely adjustable.

Tot School-- Lighting it Up!

ADELINE SAYS "PEEK"

Have you seen these light tables posted around on some blogs?  Well I am in looooooove with them.  Adeline is very visually stimulated, she is always staring at the chandlers in our house, so when I saw these I knew that Adeline must have one.

Well, I could make one. I found some good ideas on line such as this on:  http://www.teachpreschool.org/2011/06/diy-light-table-for-preschool/

I could buy one, but most of them are made for artists or photography and not sure how it would handle getting dropped to the floor.  So I borrowed this one from a friend to see what Adeline thought of it before I put a lot of time and effort into it.  Well, she looooooved it.  It held her attention for such a long time.  She sat and played with letters for much longer than she would of she just had the letters on a tray or the floor.   I have seen some great ideas that other moms are doing I think I am convinced to try and make one.

Has any one made a light table and had good success?  Please let me know.

Tot School -- Do A Dot Art --Squares

We discovered a great new coloring tool.  Do A Dot Art, these are sponge tip dotters.  They are similar to a bingo dotters but these are non toxic and washable.   My kids loved working with these today.  On the box it states that they are for ages 3 and up but Adeline is 2 and a half  and she did great with it.  I actually think they could help with eye hand coordination and ever hand strength.

Since we have been working on squares I taped down a square coloring page and let her dot away on it.  She thought it was great she kept say "dot, dot"  as she dotted.  She did put it in her mouth once, but hey these are non toxic!

Once Adeline gets a little older there are some really neat printable for these on line.  Just goggle Do a Dot printables and you will find many.  Some of my favorites can be found at the Childcareland website
http://www.earlylearningactivities.com/PDF/alphadoadot.pdf.  This link is for the alphabet.  I think they are really neat.

We also found some neat pictures at:

Here is a picture of these neat little guys:

Adeline is getting into her "dot's".

This is so much fun!!   Do you like my square?

Adeline is going to give this a try with BOTH hands.

Here are some of those fun shapes you can find on the DLTK web site

Tot School --- Circles day 2

We played with some laminated circles today.  We just talked about circles.  One of Adeline's therapist told me one time that it takes about 30 times of exposure to get something new in our memory.  Not sure if this is true or not , but I know that the more interaction with a new concept the better.  So this week we are interacting with circles.

The HELP checklist lists working with a glue stick in the age 2 area.  I have not even though of giving a glue stick to Adeline, but today we did some "sticking".  Now, I used the glue stick and I let her stick it on.  Maybe tomorrow I will let her use the stick at the table.

Later we bounced!

Tot School --- Circles!

Adeline has mastered sorting and matching colors.  Yeah, go Adeline!  So we are moving onto shapes.  We are going to start with circles.

I found this big chalkboard at a thrift store and love it.  So many possibilities!  I think I need three more.  I started by doing some hand over hand with Adeline and making circles on the board.  She thinks this is not necessary and draws her lines.  On a happy note, I did get her to say "down" as she drew "down".  This was a new word.  We started on the floor but I then moved her to her stool to challenge her core a little more.

I have been saving milk caps for over a year.  There are many neat uses for them.  We used them in some of our activities today.  Since milk caps are circles we did some core work crossing midline with our circles.

Ian did a spelling activity while we where doing this.

We played with a sensory bag, that had circles in it.  I made this with some cheap hair gel and some circle chips added inside.

Last, I traced some circles on a file folder and had Adeline put a cap on the circles.  I was not sure how this would go but she did it.

That ends day one with circles.  More to come.
