Counting and Quantities for Preschoolers

We have been working on counting and learning quantities.  Here are some of the activities we have been doing.

1.  Matching milkcaps to circles on filefolders

2.  Spelling numbers - I found these wonderful templates at Confessions of a homeschooler.  I use our foam magnetic letter along with this activity.

3.  Counting Strip -  OK, I know this looks a bit ragged and it is.  I started with a sentence strip and every week or so I add another.  We count through these number every day.

4.  Counting animals -  I lay out some of our beany babies and Adeline counts them.

5.  Making Marks -  I had some left over laminated pieces so I write a number, and Adeline makes that many marks with her dry erase pen.

6.  Magna Doodle Counting-  I write a number on our magna doodle and Adeline uses a refrigerator magnet to count out the correct quantity,

7.  Counting Bears -  Again I found these templates at Confessions of a homeschooler

8.  Fine Motor Counting -  Counting beans while we drop them into a bottle.

Dressing a Snowman

Today we dressed a felt snowman.  I cut a simple snowman out of felt and we added his parts.  We talked about quite a bit of vocabulary during this activity and used our fine motor skill to put him together.  I got this idea from a great therapy web site.    http://therapyfunzone.com/blog/2011/12/snow-man-dressing/.

Adeline was quite proud of herself when she finished!  Did you notice she has her glasses on?  This is a huge accomplishment!

We "pushed" snowflake toothpicks into playdough.

Snowflake Colors

I found these snowflakes at childcareland and thought they would be great to work on colors and fine motor.  Adeline knows most of her colors but her fine motor is not so great, so I thought this would be fun.  I don't have the exact link to the snowflakes but here is the link to child cares web site  http://www.childcareland.com/.

I just used buttons to match the colors but many others things could be used as well.

Awhile ago I print up Adeline's color flashcards from Brillkids and made them into a book.  I wanted her to be able to look at her colors as much as she wanted.  I would read these to her often also.  This book has now become a bit dull because she knows most of her color so I thought I would revive it by making it into a matching color words interactive book.

I need to add the Velcro yet.  I want her to be able to stick on each word under the matching word.  Thought this would be a handy quiet book to take to church and other places.

Tot School -- Scooting Along with Fall Fun

One of Adelines favorite activities is playing with the scooter board.  Today was very exciting because she did many new things on her board.  Usually she will sit on the board and I will move her around holding on to her ankles and saying "ready, set, go"  she loves that.

Today I sat her on her board and she started moving herself using her feet.  She went back and forth across the room.

Next, I put her on her tummy.  She has always been scared on her tummy on the board, but she took off.  She started to pull herself across the room.  She thought it was great.

Riding on the scooter is another great activity that works with vestibular stimulation.  The vestibular system has a strong influence on muscle tone, which is at the core of most development and/or learning disorders

Later we got into our contact paper and made some fall leaves

Contact paper is one of my favorites to use with Adeline right now because I am just not into the glue yet.  Here she can just stick it on and we are all set.

Tot School-- Name Matching and pumpkins

Adeline is really enjoying matching activities, so I made her this name match.  We are keeping things simple right now and just putting the letter under the letter to be matched but later we will be able to mix it up.  Adeline is not able to identify her name yet, but I thought this would give her exposer.

I made this from some poster board and index cards.  The strip was to long to laminate for my little laminater so I used some clear contact paper.  I added velcro to stick the letters on.

Here in Florida there are not many pumpkin fields,  this "pumpkin patch"  is the best we  can do.

Our Favorite Flashcards

When Adeline was a baby we started with the Baby Bumblebee Flashcards.  I liked these because the words and the pictures were on the same side of the card and on the back it showed how to sign the word.  These cards are also nice and thick and this was good because Adeline chewed on them and tried to bend them.  The picture is also very clear on these cards.

Now that Adeline is older (2)  we are working on reading along with vocabulary development.  I have switched to the Brillkids program.   This program allows me to print any flashcards I need.  They also have put their cards in categories such as action words, common animals, parts of the body, etc.  Their pictures are clear and the words are large.   Adeline has learned many words and facts from this program.
