Learning Colors

I am on a milkcap run right now.  They are great free learning!  I made this game way to difficult for Adeline but I wanted to have it done so that she could grow into it.

For this activity I used milkcaps and paint chips from a paint department.  You will need two chips of the same color, one for the cap the other for matching.  I cut circles out and glue guned them onto the lid.

You can start however simple or difficult your child needs.  I used about six colors with Adeline.

Straws and a Box

Using a shoe box that I covered with paper we played "straws in a box".  This activity is a great fine motor activity, but also eye hand coordination.  I cut the strays in various lengths and we put them "in the box".  Pipe cleaners would work great for this activity also because you could incooperate matching the colors.   Ours straws had some color strips and I was not sure if Adeline would notice them or not but she did.

Fine Motor Sorting

This is a simple sorting activity that can be done at many different levels.  If you child has been working on sorting for a while I recommend using at least three bottles, if they are a beginner start with two.  If you are not sorting yet but what to work on colors or fine motor just use one bottle and one color.

I'm sorry I should have removed the green balls from the bowl for this sort.  It should just show red and yellow balls.

Also this should have just had red balls.  While doing this activity you can work on speech while putting "red ball in".

We also did this activity while siting on the bosu ball.  This works our fine motor and gross motor together.  Sorry the lighting is not great.

A bosu ball this a great piece of exercise equipment sort of like a half yoga ball.  I love it because I can have Adeline sit on it and I don't have to hold on like I would if she where on a yoga ball.  This help to do multi- task activities.

12 Activities to Teach Colors and Have Fun

We have been working on our colors for a while and I believe that Adeline has most of them down.  I have tried to just talk about colors whatever we are doing and playing and I believe this has helped.

I put a list together for some of our favorite color activities.  This will be number one; baking soda, vinegar, and food coloring, so fun.  This activity also used fine motor with the scooping.

Swirling Colors

We had so much fun today.  This is not the project I planned on doing it just evolved into this and it was great.  I started by making the recipe for cornstarch muck.  We did not measure today; I just poured in two boxes and slowly added water, mixing with my hands until I had the consistency I wanted.  If you add too much water you will just have a liquid mess so add just a little at a time.

We just added a couple drops of food color to see what happens and we got these beautiful swirls.  My kids really enjoyed this.  Once the swirls were all mixed together and it was getting ugly we added a few more drops and kept swirling.

This turned into a fun color sensory activity.

Sensory Learning

We are doing some sensory matching activities today.  I have had a roll of bubble wrap laying around so I thought Adeline would enjoy doing some activities with it.

Using the smooth side, I drew some color shapes on one strip, and numbers on another.  One detail I learned is that the markers need to be permanent.  The washable just never dry and make a mess.  I turned the bubble wrap over and we worked on the bumpy side.

Our first task was to match colors.  I have a stack of color flashcards I purchased at the Dollar Tree we used the card to match colors.

We also added pom poms to the colors.

Later we walked on numbers and did some counting.

We also did some matching.

Three Ways to Sort Colors

We have been sorting colors for awhile and Adeline has done well with it.  Today I wanted to have her work on bending and reaching so I brought in the colors.  I used paper tubes and gave them each a color,  I added  some magnets to the back and stuck a piece of packing tape to the bottom.

We did this first standing up.  I put the basket down low so that Adeline would need to bend down and pick up her pom poms.  I spaced the tubes as far apart as possible so that she would be crossing midline to drop the ball in.  We worked on "drop and in"  with this activity.

Next, we did the same thing but sitting on a stool.  This also involved bending, reaching and crossing midline.  If you child is not standing yet a stool would work great with this activity to add a little extra challenge.

Last, Adeline sat on her yoga cow.  This cow challenges her stability a bit so she works on her balance while sorting colors.
