BrillKids and Early Learning

I have been wanting to write about how we are teaching Adeline to read and learn vocabulary at the same time.  For about six months we have been using an early reading program from Brillkids.  When Adeline was born and we learned that she had down syndrome I quickly started my research and read about a man named Glen Doman.  He has worked with many typical children and children with a diagnosis to help them reach their fullest potential.  That is what I wanted, I knew that Adeline could do so much and I was not going to settle for the norm so I read what Glen Doman taught about teach our children.

One of Doman's methods for teaching reading is using the flash method, and showing sets of words to your child quickly about two to four times a day.  Now this is a great method and it does work but I also home school three other children and did not always have the time to create these cards.  Adeline also needed a picture to go with the word, so then I found the Brillkids program.  This program saved me and has taught Adeline more than I could have in the time we have.  Adeline watches a set of words and pictures on the computer twice and day and I also print up her flashcards from the program.  We then do the cards when we have time.   Adeline amazes many by all the words and concepts she knows.  This program has been a great blessing to us.

This was perfect.  Adeline loves matching games and this will give another chance to work with those words.

This Is How We Crawl and Creep -- Gross Motor Task

      Studies have shown that crawling and creeping  are important steps in a child's development.  According to Glen Doman  "crawling and creeping are essential not only to walking but in the overall programming of the brain."  Crawling and creeping also help to build up the upper body and strengthen the wrists and hands.

     Adeline scoots, so we need to have "crawling times".  When we are outside Adeline crawls like a bear because she does not like the grass, so we go up and down hills, bear crawling.  Inside I have some mats on the floor that we crawl on as much as possible at least four times a day.  She will not do this by herself, I have to crawl behind her otherwise she will move into a scoot.  So we both get our workout.

A Few of My Favorites

     I love books!  I am a junkie for books.  I guess it goes along with being a homeschool mom.  I thought I would share some of the books that have helped guide me along the way.

     I started with the How Smart is Your Baby, by Glen Doman.  This book is like a developmental program for your baby.  We did not do everything but we did a lot, and I am still using this book even though Adeline is 2.

     I recently purchased the Physcially Superb book.  I read it and we are still working on crawling.  One day soon I will show you how we do this.  Adeline chooses to scoot on her bottom but we have crawling times.   

     One of my favorites is Active Baby Healthy Brain.  This book is full of activities to do with your child up to about age 6.  They explain how to do the activity and how the activity will help your child.  Such as vestibular or gross motor or visually.  It is a neat book!

     One of my other favorites is How am I Going to Teach This Kid?   The author wrote this book for those who are working with children who are on the Autism Spectrum.   But I think it could be used for any child who is a visual learner.  It has simple little ideas that are easy to implement to teach children to work independently.
